Teaching Grammar Lexically – Andrew Walkley 
EC, Dolphin House, Manchester Street, Brighton
Andrew discussed what a lexical approach to language teaching might mean, including the problems of a traditional ‘structures plus words’. He considered what teaching grammar lexically might involve.

Critical Thinking in ELT – Martyn Ford

Teachers nowadays are encouraged to develop students’ thinking skills; as a result, learning English means learning to think in English. Martyn set out core principles and suggested practical tasks and activities to develop critical thinking in its wider application to ELT at different levels and ages.

Teaching British Culture – Ed Russell

Ed proposed that we work towards interculturality and cosmopolitanism as starting points via an uncovering of what we believe to be normal. He approached the puzzle of teaching “culture” and language using practical classroom activities.

Using Movement in the Classroom – Emily Milner
St Giles International, 1-3 Marlborough Road, Brighton
Emily explored the idea that movement in the classroom helps learners focus,improves memory, raises motivation levels, results in greater participation, and builds good rapport within a group. She reflected on how often movement can be used and considered various practical ways to develop this.

British Study Centres, 47 Cromwell Road, Hove
Ice’s session provided teachers with practical and easy to prepare speaking activities. She focussed on activities to develop fluency that were material light, interactive and adaptable for all levels.

Top Tips for Young Learner Teachers – Martin Sketchley
EC, Dolphin House, Manchester Street, Brighton
Martin offered ideas and activities to spice up YL lessons, such as starters, reviewing vocabulary or how to group students together.

Embracing Mixed-level classes – Iza Varnier

Iza’s session explored teaching methods and practical activities, seeing mixed levels as an opportunity for the teacher to grow and create a sense of community in the classroom.

Ed Tech tools for the language classroom – Anna Neil

Anna demonstrated how ELT materials can be created using two of the more significant EdTech developments of the year: gamification and augmented/virtual reality. Teachers were advised to download two apps, Aurasma and Google Cardboard, beforehand.

An Overview of SEN – Caroline Roberts

As Special Educational Needs (SENs) are losing their taboo, teachers and students are able to identify and deal with them more effectively within a learning context. Caroline (Eurocentres Bournemouth) gave an overview of SEN and provided practical ideas on helping students with SENs. It included recognising an SEN, what a learner with SEN requires to optimise learning, and how to deal with SENs in the busy classroom without causing interruption.

Maintaining Motivation – Chris Jory

Motivated learners are more likely to engage in the learning process both inside and outside the classroom. However, it is sometimes difficult to determine exactly what it is that motivates learners. Is it their individual desire to learn or is it the materials we use, or could it be what actually goes on in the classroom? This workshop looked at the recent history of motivation in English language teaching and then outlined ways that teachers can think about motivation.

Engaging learners – Adrian Doff

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.” Maya Angelou

And yet helping learners to become more effective users of spoken language is no mean task. Adrian considered some of the key factors in not just engaging learners, but also helping them to actually develop and improve their speaking skills, enabling them to become more effective communicators.
